SALIX NewsWhat We've Done

Salix Resource Management Limited was retained by an Oil and Gas Client for a multi-year project that entailed the removal of soils which exceeded Tier 1 or Tier 2B and 2C guidelines, from an abandoned battery site.

A site-specific risk assessment (SSRA) was completed.  This SSRA provided site specific chloride and SAR criteria for soils below the 1.5 m depth in five risk areas. The battery site had a Tank Farm, Facilities, UST and Pilings area former pit area and flare pit. These areas had a combination of PHC, salinity, and metals impacts. impacted with PHC and salts. The Flare Pit “Flare Stack” area exceeding PAH, PHC and salt guidelines. Additional drilling and data from sites nearby were utilized to characterize and understand the natural variability of soils chemistry at the site.

Closure sample locations were overlaid onto a survey diagram which illustrates the excavation with topographical information as well as sample location and the Tier 2C criteria zones. Soils within 1.5 m of surface, or outside of the Tier 2C zones, were excavated to meet Tier 1. The excavation progressed and was guided via progressive sampling in 2013 and 2014. A total of 127 confirmatory samples were obtained from the excavation to demonstrate that soils had been remediated to either the applicable criteria for that area.  In 2016 and 2017, an additional 50 samples were obtained to demonstrate that final remediation and contouring work had resulted in soils above the 1.5 m level meeting the AB Tier I criteria. Based on the data, remediation work commenced in September 2013 and was completed in December 2015. A total of 29,495.11 tonnes of impacted soil was generated from remediation at the battery site. Once closure was attained, backfilling and grading of the area occurred in 2016.
